Bennett will head to the Packers after New England allowed him to walk

Martellus Bennett, a critical piece of the New England Patriots Super Bowl championship, will sign a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers.

This news comes very shortly after Green Bay opted not to re-sign Jared Cook, who caught two touchdowns for the Packers in three playoff games last season.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported Bennett would return to the NFC North as a member of the Packers.

Bennett turns the Packers offense into an even more dynamic threat to defenses across the league. Last year in his sole season with the Patriots Bennett caught a career-high seven touchdowns.

At 6’7 Bennett provides Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a menacing red zone target to pair with receivers Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson.

Rodgers acknowledged his excitement in Green Bay gifting him another quality weapon on offense.

Expect the Packers to invest even more money into their offense as the new league year continues. Running back Eddie Lacy is making free agency visits and will meet with the Packers brass during his travels.

Third-year multi-purpose player Ty Montgomery emerged as a running back when Lacy dealt with injuries last season. The former Stanford standout rushed for 457 yards and three touchdowns, while also catching 44 passes.

With one of the deepest running back draft classes in recent memory coming up next month the Packers could find a quality back in the second or third round once they are on the clock.

Until then, the “bad man” Aaron Rodgers will enjoy the plethora of receiving talent at his dangerous disposal.
