Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield Arrested In Arkansas

The University of Oklahoma has high hopes about their prospects this 2017 season and quarterback Baker Mayfield is a big reason why.

Rather than enter the NFL draft as many expected, the 21-year old decided to return for his senior season. No doubt he’d like to pick up where he left off in 2016 when he finished third in the Heisman trophy race. Not to mention finally getting the Sooners back to a national championship that has eluded them for close to two decades. Unfortunately he’s not getting off to the best start.

Word is the quarterback was arrested on multiple charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fleeing and resisting arrest in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The exact details of what happened are still being collected but one thing is for sure. This isn’t good for his prospect as the starter at Oklahoma this year. Never mind what it might do to his future NFL hopes.

Mayfield was outstanding in 2016, throwing for 3,965 yards and 40 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. He also ran for 177 yards and another six touchdowns. There is no questioning his productivity. He’s got mobility and a good arm as well. The problem for the most part was his size. Current reports are he’s around 6’0″ tall, but he may not even be that given the reputation for teams to exaggerate such things.

In other words the last thing Mayfield could afford was a serious question about his character coming out. This police incident is a gut punch considering most viewed him as a likely mid round prospect to start with. He could be flirting with undrafted territory if this is as bad or worse than it sounds. In other words it may take a near-perfect 2017 season at Oklahoma to escape the potential damage of what has just happened.

Such is the reality of being a quarterback bound for the NFL.
