It’s amazing how far away 2015 seems for Darrelle Revis now. At that point in time he was still considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

He’d just won a Super Bowl the season before and was returning in triumph to the New York Jets, earning a massive contract in the process. He rewarded the fans with his seventh career Pro Bowl campaign, helping the Jets to a 10-6 record. Unfortunately they didn’t make the playoffs. It would seem that heartbreaking loss to Buffalo in the season finale took the wind out of his sails.

Word is Revis showed up for camp the next year out of his customary top physical condition. Those close to him warned that 2016 was going to be a rough one for him, and they were right. Revis was torched repeatedly in coverage. Far more often than any other time in his pro football career. He finished with just one interception and five passes defended.

Some contemplated his inevitable move to safety. Others feel his career may be coming to an end. Now the Jets may have to help accelerate that process after a wacky altercation involving the 31-year old up in Pittsburgh.

This has got to rank as one of the swiftest endings to a potential Hall of Fame career in NFL history. Two years ago Revis was at the top of his profession. Admired and respected by all. Now he’s lost his aura on the field and could be facing potential jail time off of it. Time will tell on just what happened during the altercation. Perhaps it’s not as bad as it sounds. Perhaps it’s even worse than it sounds.

Either way it looks like the Jets have found their perfect excuse to part ways with the veteran cornerback, getting his contract off the books. Even if he escapes the charges, odds are his NFL career is all but finished.
