Atlanta has lost their defensive star Desmond Trufant for the season

A tough break for the Atlanta Falcons comes out less than 24 hours before the team takes the field against the Cardinals.

Cornerback Desmond Trufant suffered a torn pectoral muscle last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter confirms that the cornerback will need season-ending surgery to repair his pectoral muscle.

Trufant finishes his fourth season in Atlanta with an interception, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and four pass deflections.

More from NFL Mocks

While not as productive in the box score as last season, Trufant continued to play on a top-notch level prior to his injury this year.

Undrafted rookie free agent Brian Poole out of Florida could be next in line to start for the Falcons.

Hoping to void another second-half collapse, do not be surprised if Atlanta scours practice squads across the NFL for a suitable starter.

Atlanta also carries cornerbacks Robert Alford, CJ Goodwin, Jalen Collins, and Deji Olatoye on their 53-man roster.

Atlanta (6-4) will host the Cardinals (4-5-1) Sunday for an early kickoff game on Fox.
