In a battle of two Big Ten teams, the West overcame the heavily favored East. Wisconsin’s defense held Michigan State to just six points, and contained the running game early.

Spartans running back L.J. Scott managed just 61 yards on 14 carries against a stout Wisconsin rushing defense. Wisconsin had previously shutdown LSU running back Leonard Fournette in their season opener earlier this month.

Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook went 16-26 with 195 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Hornibrook’s lone touchdown pass was completed to senior tight end Eric Steffes.

Badgers running back Corey Clement was returning with an injury, but lit-up the scoreboard with two touchdowns.

Michigan State quarterback Tyler O’Connor won the game on paper, throwing for over 224 yards and going 18-38. What ultimately killed O’Connor and the Spartans were the three interceptions thrown to Wisconsin defenders.

Wisconsin has surprised teams throughout the season thanks to a steady defense. They did much of the same last year, finishing as the second best rushing defense. With only one member of the front seven (Joe Schoebert) leaving for the NFL, many of the same pieces are in place this year to succeed.

The schedule only gets harder for the Badgers, who face Michigan next week in the Big House. They follow that up with a night game against Ohio State.

Michigan State will travel to Indiana for a prime time game next week, and will then host BYU.
