Easily one of the most shocking roster cuts of the 2016 was when the Green Bay Packers parted ways with Pro Bowl offensive guard Josh Sitton.

Though he didn’t have as great a year last season, most believed there were no signs that Sitton was going to suddenly fall off a cliff. He remains one of the better guards in football and is only 30-years old. Barring a significant injury, he should have around 3-4 good years left before a noticeable decline begins. Later details emerged that the move by Green Bay had nothing to do with Sitton’s skill. It was all about cost.

Sitton was in the final year of his current contract. There were rumblings he was upset about not getting a new deal and expected a certain dollar amount based off his success with the team. However, the Packers have a long history of not going over certain thresholds when it comes to money at every position. It seems Sitton crossed that line for them, and so they decided to break ties.

Either way it’s clear Josh Sitton is a part of NFL free agency now and no doubt has a number of suitors eager for the chance to bring him in to help their current line situations. Figuring out those with the greatest need and best fit is the biggest challenge. All things being equal, keep an eye on these teams.

Cleveland Browns

With such solid veteran players, it’s often best to follow the money. No team has more salary cap space at present than the Browns with over $51 million. They can more than meet the price of what Sitton will demand. There’s also the fact they gave up more sacks than any team in the preseason. It’s clear their offensive line can use more help. Robert Griffin III might appreciate another dependable blocker.

Seattle Seahawks

The turnover on the offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks has been rather staggering. They lost two of their best blockers to free agency in tackle Russell Okung and guard J.R. Sweezy. Early returns show they still haven’t quite figured the problem out and are still looking for solutions. Sitton may not fit their heavy-running style, but if protecting Russell Wilson is the goal then he’s the guy they want.

Chicago Bears

Many veteran players prefer to stay within their own division when considering free agency. There is also the idea of getting a chance to show their former team that they gave up on him too soon. Sitton could accomplish both goals with the Chicago Bears. Their offensive line woes really began after center Hroniss Grasu tore his ACL. Since then they’ve been searching for answers. Adding Sitton alongside Kyle Long and promising rookie Cody Whitehair would be quite an answer to their prayers.
