Cleveland Browns: Could Josh Gordon be welcomed back?

Would the Cleveland Browns welcome back wide receiver Josh Gordon if he is reinstated in August? Apparently, it’s a possibility…

If troubled Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon is reinstated into the NFL when he is eligible to apply in August, would his team welcome him back?

With the recent problems involving former first round pick Johnny Manziel, it’s reasonable to believe that the Browns would simply show Gordon the door. However, it’s probably not that simple.

Unlike Manziel, Gordon is a top talent at his position and has proven himself capable of being a Pro Bowl level player. In 2013, Gordon led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards and he had nine touchdowns. We last saw him in 2014, when he played in five games and performed significantly below the 2013 standards that were set.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer seems to think that the Browns would at least hear Gordon out in an effort to pair him with their new Baylor receiver, Corey Coleman.

“If Gordon is reinstated after he’s eligible to apply on Aug. 1, the Browns will sit down with him and assess where he’s at. Hue Jackson has said everyone will begin with a clean slate and that includes Gordon. Jackson will look him in the eyes and try to determine if he’s as committed as he needs to be. I’m guessing that Jackson will be surprised by Gordon, who’s nothing like his public persona.”

Gordon’s return would do more than just give the Browns a trio of former Baylor Bears stars in their offense — it would give them some legitimacy.

Robert Griffin III, for all the problems he’s had in his development, could certainly throw the ball up and see whether or not Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman can come down with it.

It would have the makings of a frustrating, yet entertaining offense with the potential to be really good under the tutelage of Hue Jackson.

The Browns shouldn’t be overly against the option of bringing back Gordon, and I doubt they are. They have stuck with him this long, so why not give him another shot with the new coaching staff?
