As Tennessee Volunteers QB Josh Dobbs prepares for his senior season, we take a look at his NFL prospects. What is his NFL potential?

The SEC is never a stranger to intrigue or high profile players, and expectations are high in Knoxville to be in the mix for an SEC championship this season. One major reason for that is senior quarterback Josh Dobbs, who enters the year as one of the prospects NFL scouts and draft pundits are paying close attention to.

In terms of upside, ability, and intangibles, this is a really fun prospect to watch. Let’s take an early look at the kind of player he is and what he brings to the table…

Prospect Analysis

What really stands out about Dobbs is obviously his ability to run with the ball. He has an uncanny ability to escape pressure and make plays with his legs, and that translated to 11 rushing touchdowns a year ago, including an incredible play against Northwestern in the Outback Bowl on a broken play.

Dobbs doesn’t have ideal bulk (listed by some at under 210 pounds) but has a lanky frame and room to add muscle to be more durable and physical.

His vision downfield and ability to see openings as a runner is a huge asset in his favor. He has great burst to the second level and has great agility and quickness to make defenders miss.

As a passer, Dobbs is still in the development stage. Some of that has to do with the offense he’s in at Tennessee, some of it has to do with where he’s at as a prospect. He’s capable of getting the ball out quickly and fitting it into tight spaces when needed, but we haven’t seen him attack downfield all that much.

More from NFL Mocks

He was tied for 80th this past season in yards per attempt, but that’s not to say he hasn’t shown himself capable of making NFL-caliber throws. He has great placement on some really tough throws, including deep outs to the sideline.

In addition to being a phenomenal athlete with a good arm, Dobbs is a hard worker and known for his intangibles. He’s the type of guy that NFL coaches will want to work with, but we’ll all be paying close attention to how he develops as a passer this year. If he shows improvement on downfield throws, I don’t think the first round is out of the question for him.

He’s an exciting playmaker and will be under the microscope as he approaches the next level.
