Concussions have been a hot-button issue around the world of football for the better part of two decades.

We have seen budding stars such as Chris Borland step away from the game at a young age to preserve their long-term health.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame wide receiver Corey Robinson announced he would no longer play the game of football after being diagnosed with three concussions over the past year alone.

The son of basketball Hall of Famer David Robinson, Corey Robinson reportedly suffered his most recent concussion during the Notre Dame spring practices. Head Coach Brian Kelly said Robinson would evaluate his future in the game once word got out the wide receiver suffered another head injury.

Robinson released this statement Wednesday morning after coming to the decision to protect his long-term heath.

"“After much contemplation and prayer, I have decided not to continue playing football due to multiple concussions. I couldn’t have come to this difficult personal decision without the incredible support from so many within the Notre Dame football program. I am extremely thankful to Coach Kelly and his staff for the life-changing opportunity to play football at the greatest University in the world. I will continue to help our team as a student assistant and look forward to a great senior year.”"

Robinson also personally reached out to his coaches, teammates and Fighting Irish fans on Twitter and thanked them for their support throughout his college football career at Notre Dame.

In three seasons at Notre Dame, Corey Robinson had 896 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 65 plays from scrimmage.

After losing star receiver Will Fuller to the NFL Draft, the Irish will rely on several rising stars on their depth chart. Torii Hunter Jr (son of former baseball outfielder Torii Hunter) and Corey Holmes will need to step up, while Amir Carlisle will be looked at as the next man up on the depth chart.

Three-star wide receiver Kevin Stephenson has already enrolled at Notre Dame, while three four-star wide receivers have signed their Letters of Intent to play for Notre Dame.
