The Dallas Cowboys have perhaps the next undrafted free agent gem on their roster in wide receiver Ed Eagan, a dynamic playmaker that can play receiver as well as return kicks and punts. He scored 17 touchdowns over the course of his career. Take a look…
Eagan didn’t play at a big name school and doesn’t have great size for a wide receiver. He’s just under 6-0 and weighs less than 200 pounds. But he’s got good deep speed, is elusive in the open field, and has a knack for scoring the football.
Athletically, there isn’t a whole lot that stands out about this guy. He’s just a really good football player. That seems to be a common theme with all of the undrafted guys we are profiling here. It seems that teams often prioritize the great athlete who has perhaps more upside in that regard, but they pass on a lot of guys who might be better football players that don’t have the elite measurables.
Eagan is a prime example of that.
He’s not Josh Doctson. He’s not Laquan Treadwell. In fact, it’s probably not even wrong that he was undrafted. The Cowboys, however, got a really good look at Eagan having worked with him at the Senior Bowl, and they obviously liked what they saw from this kid in a practice setting.
He finishes catches, runs solid routes, and has potential as a slot player as well as a returner. He finished his collegiate career with 5,651 total yards and caught the eye of Senior Bowl director Phil Savage, another former NFL talent evaluator.
I don’t think I would be going out on any limb in saying that the Cowboys are one of the best teams in the NFL at finding talent that can contribute outside of the draft. The prime example would be of course Tony Romo, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL when healthy and the poster-child for success as an undrafted free agent.
Along with Romo, the Cowboys have a number of impressive undrafted gems like safety Barry Church, kicker Dan Bailey, punter Chris Jones, wide receiver Cole Beasley, and offensive lineman La’El Collins (though, that’s not really the same…).

The list goes on with more guys who have been key role players, like Lance Dunbar, and that’s probably what kind of player Eagan is capable of being. He will have to make his mark on special teams first before he gets a crack at offensive snaps, and he might be destined for the practice squad for awhile, but there’s no question this guy has talent.
Like I said before, the Cowboys have done a good job over the years of uncovering these diamonds in the rough, and Eagan could be another in that prolific list.
