Every team going into the 2016 NFL season has at least one prominent roster battle to watch.  What are the biggest ones worth tuning in for in the NFC North division?

The order will go from top to bottom of the standings from 2015 and will see a wide variety of different positions up for grabs that should include a number of prominent players.

Minnesota Vikings:  Captain Munnerlyn vs. Mackensie Alexander

Few coaches love collecting defensive backs more than Mike Zimmer.  He’ll have quite the time sorting out the log jam the Minnesota Vikings have created at the corner position.  There are a few notable battles that could take place, but perhaps the most interesting will be between veteran Captain Munnerlyn and 2nd round pick Mackensie Alexander.  Given their shorter size and athletic traits, both are premier options for the nickel corner spot.  With Xavier Rhodes, Terence Newman and Trae Waynes handling the outside, this represents their best chance to get on the field.

Green Bay Packers:  David Bakhtiari vs. Jason Spriggs

Aaron Rodgers was sacked 46 times in 2015.  That is entirely unacceptable for the Green Bay Packers, who should know by now they don’t have an ironman like Brett Favre under center.  Rodgers is the best quarterback in football but he can’t be that if he’s getting pounded every week.  That is why Ted Thompson took steps to improve the talent and depth of their offensive line.  By far the most notable addition was Indiana tackle Jason Spriggs, an athletic pass protector who will challenge current starter David Bakhtiari who struggled last season.

Detroit Lions:  Tavon Wilson vs. Miles Killebrew

Hoping to replace James Ihedigbo at strong safety, the Lions made two key acquisitions in anticipation of a competition.  Tavon Wilson is a veteran from New England, very similar to Ihedigbo in background, having learned as primarily a reserve for the Patriots.  This represents his biggest chance yet to start.  He’ll be challenged by Miles Killebrew, a standpoint from Southern Utah known for his instinct and his nasty hitting ability.

Chicago Bears:  Ka’Deem Carey vs. Jordan Howard

John Fox has said he plans to ride the hot hand at running back this season.  That essentially means the Bears will employ his trademark running back-by-committee approach.  Jeremy Langford fulfills the speed aspect of their retooled backfield, but the question is who will provide the power.  They have two intriguing options.  Ka’Deem Carey came on late last season, scoring all three of his touchdowns in the final five weeks.  Jordan Howard in their rookie 5th round pick, a big and strong back out of Indiana known for his ability to grind defenses down.  How each performs in short yardage could determine this outcome.
