The New York Giants uncovered a future star at the tight end position in Will Tye, who was an afterthought in the 2015 NFL Draft process…

New York Giants tight end Will Tye once left Florida State in search of more playing time.

That seems like a lifetime ago.

Tye transferred to Stony Brook to get his name out there a little bit more while Florida State was busy winning national championships. It would have been easy to second guess such a decision after being heavily recruited by every major school on the East Coast as a three-star recruit, but there just weren’t enough footballs to go around when Tye was a member of the Seminoles.

The New York Giants may have lucked into getting Tye to come to minicamp with them after the NFL draft in 2015 as the fastest TE in the nation certainly had his pick of the litter when it came to NFL teams wanting him.

At his pro day last Spring, Tye ran a 4.47 second 40-yard dash in front of scouts, which prompted everyone to turn back to his tape and what we all saw was one of the draft’s biggest sleepers coming to life.

Tye not only caught the ball well at Stony Brook, but he proved he could also block and he even did a little punt returning. Pretty impressive for a guy who is nearly 260 pounds, but Stony Brook wasn’t about to waste such an incredible talent by restricting him to just TE duties.

They probably thought that any chance they had to get this guy the football would be a wise decision.

The New York Giants somehow snuck Tye through to the practice squad after a strong offseason, and promoted him in early October. In 13 games in his rookie season, he caught 42 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns, emerging as a legitimate threat in the Giants’ offense and proving over the course of the last month of the season that he has star qualities.

His unique size and speed combination gives the Giants yet another mismatch offensively in a group that already includes Odell Beckham Jr., one of the best receivers in the NFL. As Tye emerged over the second half of the regular season, the Giants had to be licking their chops at what he can become.

In a year where the tight end position was much maligned at least as far as the draft process was concerned, Tye proved to be probably the best one of the bunch so far, and with the way the Giants saw him develop quickly, there’s no question he’s going to be a big part of the offense moving forward.
