Jarran Reed, DT Alabama: 2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report
When you look at some of the best 4-3 defensive tackles in this years draft, Alabama’s Jarran Reed is one of the names you’ll hear most often. Known as a punishing run stopper, Reed is beginning to overshadow teammates Reggie Ragland and A’Shawn Robinson and take the next step into becoming a lock in the first round.
Height: 6’4
Weight: 313 lbs
Strengths
With Jarran Reed you are getting one of, if not, the best run stopper in this years draft. He’s very aware of his surroundings and can extend his arms out and bring down running backs with one hand. His quickness off of the line helps with that as well.
You can see multiple strong points in Reed’s game on his seven second clip. First off is his quickness off the line, his strength and balance against opponents, and his awareness and instinct to bring down the runner.
In addition, he stands firmly cemented in his designed zone and doesn’t get pushed back by offensive lineman. He has a strong base and holds himself well against some of college football’s best.
Weaknesses
There’s not too much not to like about Jarran Reed. His pass rushing is not as refined as some may like, but he’s so good as a run stopper teams shouldn’t lose sleep over it. His balance and pad levels are solid for the most part, but you can see he is still working 0n fine tuning it. Another thing to note is his motor. It’s certainly not the worst I’ve seen, but it wont be at the top when the Combine rolls around.
A final note I need to throw in is that Reed was arrested back in July of 2014 for a DUI. NFL teams will certainly investigate this incident, especially in today’s day and age.
Final Thoughts
Jarran Reed is another legitimate first round pick coming out of the Tide’s front seven this year. Arguably the best run defender in this years draft, Reed should find himself somewhere in the 20-28 pick range. Of course, that’s all depending on who is drafting there once the NFL playoffs are over. Any 4-3 defense would love to have Reed’s dominance up the middle.
