Prior to the month of July, the situation appeared pretty much set regarding the New York Giants defense.  Their new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was in place.  They had a strong draft headlined by safety Landon Collins and they retained star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul via the franchise tag.  The plan was simple enough.  Let him play out the deal and determine the numbers for a long-term extension towards the end of the season.

Until everything changed.

Already burned by past injury woes, the bad luck for Pierre-Paul continued in a freak accident during the mishandling of fireworks during 4th of July celebrations.  Though rumors persist the injuries aren’t career-threatening, it’s fair to say nobody is entirely sure of the extent of the damage and can’t make any sort of assessment on how it impacts his play until he gets back on the field.  Top defensive lineman need their hands as much as any part on their body.  If Pierre-Paul is diminished by this, it could create a problem for the Giants who were 4th in the league in sacks largely thanks to him.  He was their only double digit rusher with 12.5.  The next closest was Jonathan Hankins with seven.

One thing the situation could create is a need for New York to find more help at end, perhaps even via an NFL trade.  If that is the case, here are some possible targets for them to consider.
