The thought of T.Y. Hilton departing the Indianapolis Colts was unthinkable a few months ago.  That may have changed the moment the team chose to draft Phillip Dorsett.  How does this impact him for 2016 NFL free agency?

  • Age: 25
  • 82 catches
  • 1,345 yards
  • 7 touchdowns
  • Pro Bowl (2014)

Indeed a lot of people questioned the drafting of Dorsett as little more than a luxury pick considering the Colts already had a speed, undersized receiver who could take the top off a defense in Hilton.  However, there may be a method to the madness from the perspective of GM Ryan Grigson.  Suddenly the presence of the rookie lends Indy some bargaining power.  They can go into negotiations with Hilton believing they have the perfect insurance policy in place to let him walk if he decides to demand too high a price.

For all the great things he’s done for the team, it’s hard to deny that Hilton is little more than a one-trick pony.  Granted, it’s a hell of a trick but beyond his speed there isn’t much he can offer as a receiver.  That was proven in the playoffs when New England made him a non-factor beyond a 36-yard catch.

That might explain why the team chose to sign veteran Andre Johnson, who offers more versatility as a playmaker.  One way or another, the closer 2016 NFL free agency gets, the more interesting the negotiations between Hilton and the Colts will become.

Likeliest Outcome:  Re-signs after season ends
