Quarterback Battles: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans opted not to take a quarterback in 2015, a smart option considering the massive amount of talent coming out next season, and opted for their own young talent and veteran free agents.

Lets examine some of Bill O’Brien’s options in 2015 at the quarterback position for the Texans.

Brian Hoyer

Hoyer was somewhat rediscovered when he took over the Cleveland Browns job, and performed reasonably well. He signed a two-year deal worth $10.5 million, with $4.75 million guaranteed, to be the veteran voice at the position. His leadership is a key reason the Texans chose him over other veteran options, making him an invaluable piece to the team. Hoyer will have to adjust to the up-tempo Bill O’Brien offense, but he is reportedly taking it in well. Last season Hoyer had 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 14 games for the Cleveland Browns before being replaced by Johnny Manziel.

Ryan Mallet

Coming off pectoral surgery, the former Arkansas product has a lot to prove after sitting behind Tom Brady and getting minimal playing time in his four NFL seasons. The pec injury is not expected to limit Mallet in OTAs, or training camp for that matter. He is already showing his “trademark zip” that made him a third round pick in practices and is impressing the young receiving corp over in Houston. Expect him to have a legitimate shot to win the job in camp.

Tom Savage

The sophomore out of Pittsburgh has an uphill climb ahead of him to secure the starting role. The second year quarterback only appeared in two games last season for the Texans, finishing with a 51.9 QBR after completing 10 of his 19 pass attempts and throwing one interception. While his inconsistency will hold him back, his natural abilities are too good to ignore. Expect him to spend much of the season at the third string/practice squad quarterback for the Texans, barring any trades or injuries.
