NFL Trade Machine: Colin Kaepernick To Eagles

Dec 28, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) rushes for a gain during the third quarter against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi

The last thing anybody would ever expect to come from the San Francisco 49ers camp would be the idea that they’re shopping quarterback Colin Kaepernick.  Yet, somehow, someway that appears to be the case according to Houston NFL radio analyst Jayson Braddock.

At first it would appear to be a hoax but other sources have begun to explore the idea and it seems this is no drill.  Kaepernick is indeed on the block, which means new head coach Jim Tomsula and GM Trent Baalke must have different plans in mind for the 49ers and they don’t involve the quarterback drafted and developed by Jim Harbaugh.

Without even thinking much about it there is no question about which team out there has every reason in the world to get on the phone about a deal.

Philadelphia Eagles

That’s right.  The team that has been active all off-season could put the crowning jewel on their efforts by landing a quarterback in Kaepernick who is an ideal fit for the Chip Kelly offense given his mixture of outstanding mobility and a rifle arm.  More than anything this could be considered a cheaper route to accomplishing that aim rather than doing as most expect the Eagles will by moving up into the top 10 of the draft for a chance at Heisman winner Marcus Mariota.

Better still, Philadelphia would have a bargaining chip in the form of quarterback Nick Foles.  He may be more along the lines of what the 49ers want or at the very least can be a good stopgap on a cheap contract until they get their guy.  As for the rest of the package it wouldn’t be anywhere near the cost for the Eagles that some were projecting (multiple 1st and 2nd round picks).

Kaepernick finished 2014 with 3,369 passing yards, 639 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 turnovers.

Unless Chip Kelly is dead set on Marcus Mariota, then this is as good a consolation prize as Philadelphia is going to find.
