Another signing has taken place before the league year officially starts next week, but this maybe the biggest and most intriguing one yet. Last Friday, the Arizona Cardinals released their long time defensive tackle, Darnell Dockett. Since being released, Dockett has visited with 49ers and he has remained in contact with the Cardinals throughout, making his decision a two horse race.

Only a few minutes ago, however, it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Scheffer that Dockett would be bringing his talents to the Bay area:

Here is some background information on the newest 49er via our staff write-ups:

"Darnell Dockett is one of the bigger-name players the league has to offer, but his play has declined in the past few years. He’s been a good pass rusher for the Cardinals, but he’s been getting bulldozed against the run in recent years. Dockett, who will be 34 when the 2015 season starts, tore his ACL in August and missed the entire 2014 season. At this point in his career, Dockett should be a situational pass rusher who offers great leadership in the locker room."

Dockett was very well liked by all of his teammates and everyone in the Arizona organization. In an article posted by FoxSports, Arizona GM Steve Keim had this to say about Dockett after the season: “With the energy he brings to the defense, he is the heart and soul of our team.” Dockett will be a welcomed addition, who should fit seamlessly into the 49ers aggressive defense.

Grade: A

Updated: The deal is 2 years, $7.5 million, with $2 million guaranteed (also $4 million in year one). I like this deal a lot. Dockett is still a good pass rusher, but the 49ers did well to front-load the contract and only give little guaranteed money. I give this deal an A.
