Brandon Marshall: Bears Trading the Veteran WR Smart?

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall has been flying under the radar just a bit lately. However, as Free Agency and the new NFL league year begins to kick off, reports have emerged that the Chicago Bears are actively looking for trade partners in order to move on at the wide receiver position.

Per Brad Biggs, a beat reporter at the Chicago Tribune, Chicago is looking for an opportunity to trade Marshall if the right opportunity presents itself:

As far as on-field matters go, you have to question this decision for a number of reasons. No matter who might be under center for the next couple of years for the Bears, this team must continue to add and build dynamic weapons on the outside in order for the offense to thrive. A running game and improved offensive line play is important, but help in the receiving corps is already needed.

Looking ahead to the near future, it’s pretty clear that Chicago is going to have to either spend some money or a relatively high draft pick on a wide-out. With Alshon Jeffery presenting the only stable option outside of Marshall, the receiving corps is a bit of a question mark.

Marquess Wilson, Marc Mariani, and Josh Bellamy currently sit a bit deeper on the depth chart, but undoubtedly this team is going to have to bring in multiple options to not only compete in camp, but to hopefully hit the field for a starting job sooner than later.

Why shop Marshall?

It could be an issue of money. If the Bears are seriously about overhauling this unit in a big way, they’ll need some extra spending money.

With evident issues on the defensive side of the ball, the pickings may be slim at WR once they get around to focusing there in the first place.

Freeing up a major amount of money would help the 2015 season outlook in a big way.

Overall, this could be a move that simply works out for both sides. We’ve seen a bit of tension all around in Chicago — John Fox has to rebuild a unit that he knows he can call his own.

Marshall leaving Chicago might work out well for all involved. The question now surrounds around the potential landing spots…
