WR Randall Cobb Free Agency Fits: Packers, Raiders, Jaguars

When looking at 2015 NFL Free Agency, finding teams that would want Randall Cobb is a lot easier than teams that can afford him, and teams that have a need at the same time.

All 32 NFL teams would love to have Cobb in their offensive lineup, but only one can have him.

The Green Bay Packers have seen the former Kentucky athlete turn into an NFL phenom in a short time, already establishing himself as one of the best slot receivers in the NFL at the age of 24. Obviously, Aaron Rodgers — the league MVP — and the Packers have a strong bargaining position of being one of the best, most well-established teams in the NFL.

Ultimately, I think that will win out for Cobb, but there are plenty of options available and the Packers aren’t the only team that might be willing to pay up the cash for this young star.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders are going to be connected to a lot of high profile free agents because of the money they have at their disposal, but the important thing to remember here is that this franchise has a humongous need at the WR position. Cobb would be a perfect security blanket for Derek Carr, but does he want to move from a Super Bowl contender to a rebuilding project?

Jacksonville Jaguars

Like the Raiders, the Jaguars are in the midst of a rebuilding project. The Jaguars drafted a pair of nice young receivers last year in Allen Robinson and Marquise Lee, and Cobb would certainly provide them a no. 1 option in that offense.

Again, the question here is not whether or not the Jaguars could offer enough money to pry Cobb out of Green Bay, but whether or not he feels like the money is worth leaving a more stable, championship-ready situation.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns are actually not that far off from contending for a playoff spot. They have a need for a wide receiver and this would be an intriguing fit.

Cobb could get his money and go to a pretty good situation in Cleveland where he is playing on what looked — at times — to be a playoff ready team. That might help ease Cobb away from the Packers, as he would probably want to move to a contender if the money was the same as other places were offering.

This would be an intriguing move because the Browns just added Josh McCown to possibly/probably start this season if Johnny Manziel continues to prove too green for the field. Adding a player like Cobb could be huge for the development of a young QB like Manziel.

Green Bay Packers

Obviously the Packers are a fit for Cobb. The question is whether or not Green Bay wants to pay Cobb and Jordy Nelson the kind of money it will take to keep them around for the long term when they are already also paying Aaron Rodgers big money. They also need to find a way to retain right tackle Bryan Bulaga.

Green Bay has the money to retain Cobb, and I think they’ll probably find a way to do it, but you just never know in the craziness of the NFL.
