Notre Dame TE Ben Koyack Scouting Report

Notre Dame tight end Ben Koyack showed off at the NFL combine at 6’5″ with above position-average physical traits. Below is a full scouting report, with video and draft analysis.

STRENGTHS

Koyack was mainly used as a blocking tight end in college. He showed the ability to hold his man and not get his shoulders turned by defensive linemen. He possesses enough strength to be able to push defensive lineman back and reach the second level. He runs hard to get to his man on blocking schemes and stays engaged through the play.

As a run blocker, he has a strong knowledge of how to use his hands and how to position his body with the defenders to gain leverage.

He was not used very much as a receiver, but still contributed and flashed solid ability. He can catch in traffic and stay focused through the catch.

On this play, Koyack does an excellent job faking a blocking scheme and quickly getting downfield. He keeps his focus on the ball and controls his body well during contact.

WEAKNESSES

As noted before, Koyack does not have the flashy receptions numbers tight ends can produce. He only recorded four receptions his first two seasons for the Irish, with 44 receiving yards.

His senior season would be considered his ”break out” year, hauling in 30 catches for 317 yards and all five of his collegiate touchdowns.

An aspect in the receiving game Koyack is still learning is the ability to create his own plays. On this bootleg, Koyack is in tight coverage with a defender. The quarterback is clearly trying to target him, but he makes no conscious effort to move into the open field.

Pro Comparison: Ben Koyack is best compared to Seattle Seahawks tight end Luke Wilson. Both stand at 6’5 and are mainly used in run-blocking schemes. When they do get the opportunity to be a receiver, they show strong hands and control through the catch.

Draft Prediction: Ben Koyack will likely taken on the third day of the draft. There are five or six tight ends who are ranked higher on most NFL big boards, leaving Koyack behind.

He should not have much trouble finding a job in the NFL and contributing on special teams.
