It seems from the outside that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a difficult decision ahead of them regarding the #1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.  It’s a selection they can’t afford to get wrong with the future of their franchise at stake.  It isn’t the popular pick they need to make but the right one.

So what does history say about #1 overall and where teams should probably go with it?  Here is a breakdown of every 1st pick in the draft dating back to 1960.  The names in italics are those who went on to at least one Pro Bowl in their career.

In terms of raw average the numbers clearly indicate it’s better to go offense with the top pick.  Though wide receiver and offensive tackle have as good or better averages of success, not enough have been taken at that spot to provide legitimate validation.  Meanwhile quarterbacks have owned it for 55 years and yet still maintain a hit streak of over 66%.

Granted, all of them aren’t Hall of Famers, but facts are facts.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need a quarterback.  History shows that their chances of getting a good one are as good or better than any other position in the 2015 NFL draft.

It’s just a matter of figuring out whether it will be Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota.
