2015 NFL Draft: Clive Walford Scouting Report

facebooktwitterreddit

Tight end is projected as a weaker class for the 2015 NFL Draft. Is Clive Walford a reason for that or is he one of the few gems that teams can look to for help?

School: Miami (Fl.)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 251 lbs
Arm Length: 34”
40-Yard Dash: 4.79
Bench Press: 20
Vertical Jump: 35.0”
Broad Jump: 120.0”

STRENGTHS

The first thing you notice about Walford is his size. Not only is he tall at 6’4” but he’s also big with long arms. This would explain why he excels at blocking.

That length and ability to anchor allows him to stymie pass rushers but he also isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty by going after linebackers and safeties on run plays, often with good success.

However, as everybody knows the modern NFL requires tight ends to have an impact of some sort as a pass catcher.

So does Walford fit that bill?

Indeed he does. He’s not going to wow with deep speed but he’s a good athlete with enough agility and acceleration to get out into his routes fast and get himself open. In other words, he’s going to prove a matchup problem for linebackers and safeties.

WEAKNESSES

His hands are solid most of the time though he is 50/50 on catching the ball when the catch is contested by a defender or if he gets hit when the ball arrives. It also opens him up to being stripped by defenders if he doesn’t secure the ball, which could be a big problem at the pro level.

His effort is also somewhat of a concern. At times it looks like he’s only playing at half speed, not giving a full, consistent effort. This can often impact how well he gets in and out of his routes, allowing defenders to climb into his hip pocket and play the ball, resulting in either a pass breakup or interception.

Draft Stock

Clive Walford is going to draw lots of interest from teams in the 2015 NFL Draft. His combination of size, speed, good hands and blocking ability make him a three-down player who never has to come off the field. He’ll need to answer questions about his motor and his inconsistency will keep him out of the 1st round. Still, he should go at some point in the 2nd and no later than the 3rd.
