Tre McBride: 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

After running a 4.41 40-yard dash at the combine, William and Mary WR Tre McBride opened some eyes around the league. Below is a full scouting report, with video and pro comparisons.

Strengths: At 6’0″, Tre McBride pulls in a lot of the balls over his head. He possesses both very good body control and a quality juke ability on long routes. He is best at finding soft spots in zone coverage and has the patience needed in those situations. He also stayed healthy all four of his years at William and Mary.

McBride shows his ability to go up and pull down balls against West Virginia. In the first 45 seconds of this video, he pulls down two great catches.

He also shows the commitment and ability to lay out for balls all across the field.

Weaknesses: The biggest concern here is not being able to get good separation from defenders. While he has the speed, it doesn’t show up on tape. He is an average blocker, and can give up too easily at times.

Below average hand size might worry teams as well. As the team’s kick returner, he averaged 23.1 yards in his career. In his four seasons with the Tribe, he never put up a 900-yard season, something that may bring up questions regarding his potential NFL production.

Records/Awards: Set school record with 359 all-purpose yards senior year; 2015 East-West Shrine Game participant; Finished in his school’s top-five in career receiving yards (2,653), all-purpose yards (4,281), kickoff return yards (1,294), receptions at W&M (196), and third in 100-yard receiving games; All-CAA First Team as a WR for the second consecutive season.

Pro Comparison: Most scouts compare Tre McBride to New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell. They both have similar size, body control, and the ability to contest for balls.

Draft Projection: McBride is projected to land somewhere during Day Three this spring.
