Brandon Wegher’s freshman season at Iowa was filled with highlight reel plays

In 2009, Iowa Hawkeyes Brandon Wegher was the in-state prospect with tons of talent and huge expectations from a fan base that had embraced him, and he did not disappoint. After probably the greatest high school career for a running back in Iowa state history in which he rushed for over 3,000 yards and 51 touchdowns as a senior, Wegher committed to the Hawkeyes late in 2008 and was ready to make an impact on a veteran-laden Iowa squad that was earning great preseason marks from college football analysts.

The Hawkeyes ended up making it to the Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech in Wegher’s first season as a member of the Hawkeyes, and he played his best on the biggest stage, helping lead the Hawkeyes to a dominant victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Despite splitting carries with some other talented backs, Wegher’s future was bright and it appeared as though he would be the featured back for Iowa sooner rather than later. However, the Orange Bowl was the last time Wegher suited up for the Hawkeyes. He was released from the football program after just one season, and rumors were running rampant as to exactly why it happened. Hawkeyes fans were shocked, and Wegher had moved on, transferring to Oklahoma. A great fit on paper, Wegher never appeared in any games for the Sooners either, and found himself out of football for nearly three years before picking things back up at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, much closer to home and a place to get his priorities back in order.

Playing at the NAIA school, Wegher got himself re-adjusted to the game in 2013 before absolutely blowing up this past season in 2014 with 2,680 yards and 39 touchdowns, averaging eight yards per carry. He also caught 29 passes and scored another four times on receptions.

As a player, this guy is really something else, and you absolutely have to see some of his highlights. We took a closer look at him as a prospect in a piece not too long ago.

For Wegher, the last four or five years have been largely silent. He hasn’t spoken much to the media, especially with so many rumors swirling around. Now, he is training for the NFL Draft after one of the most historic performances in NAIA history, ready for a new challenge — this time, a changed man.

Wegher was kind enough to spend some time talking to us here at NFL Mocks, and he went into further detail about his draft preparations, his time at Iowa, and what he’s doing to prepare for his future.
