WR Tre McBride Steals Show at East-West Shrine Week

The East-West Shrine Game and week of practices gets overshadowed anymore by the Senior Bowl as we get into the early stages of offseason NFL Draft prospect evaluations, but there are always players from this game who get drafted and make NFL rosters, and this year is no different.

One player who stood out to scouts who evaluated the week of practices and the game was William & Mary wide receiver Tre McBride, who was called the best prospect at this week of practices by Rotoworld.com’s Josh Norris.

McBride is a ‘smooth’ athlete, gets in and out of his breaks quickly, and has decent size at 6-1, 205 pounds. Dane Brugler compared McBride to Pierre Garcon, and this is a guy who faces an uphill battle to even be drafted. He doesn’t have blazing speed, and the last player drafted from William & Mary was back in 1992.

McBride was obviously able to dominate smaller school competition to the tune of 196 catches for 2,753 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career, but the fact that he was able to stand out and more than hold his own against tougher, much more athletic players stands out to me and probably every scout who watched him play at all this week.

More from NFL Mocks

When you watch that game tape against Richmond, you see a guy who is not only able to play both inside and outside as a receiver, but also someone who is willing and able to block in the running game, which NFL scouts are going to really like.

What I really like from that game tape is the fact that when McBride goes to run a route, it’s not like some smaller school receivers where you just see them using their physical gifts to beat worse athletes on mostly deep balls. This guy is working underneath, he’s working the sideline, and he’s working the middle of the field.

Basically, what NFL teams wanted to see from McBride this week at the Shrine Game, they got. Scouts also noted his quickness and burst as positives in his game. Coming from a small school, he’s got plenty of work yet to do but this was a great week for him and obviously he’s got a great chance at being drafted in the middle rounds.
