NOTE: A previous version of this story listed Oakman as a prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft. He will be returning to Baylor for the 2015 season. We apologize for the error. In other news, we’re looking forward to seeing him take the field in 2015!

It seems as though no matter how important and exciting the College Football Playoff was, nobody can stop talking about Baylor outside linebacker Shawn Oakman. 2015 won’t have Oakman available, but the look to the 2016 NFL Draft is too tempting to pass up.

Despite what many believe, Oakman is known for much more than just his body type. Sure, it helps scouts mold a scouting report, but it’s safe to say Oakman’s on-field play what really matters.

Let’s take a quick look at what Oakman has to offer for NFL teams looking for an elite defender in the future.

STRENGTHS

Obviously it’s hard to overlook the mammoth size that Oakman possesses when he takes the field. With his impressive build, he boasts an incredible ability to get off the ball, and uses athleticism to be an elite defender on the edge.

His first step is tremendous, as is his sheer strength to overpower offensive lineman and attack running backs. Unlike many of his size and at his position, Oakman can not only be a great run defender, but impressive against the pass in open space.

WEAKNESSES

Oakman struggled with off-field character issues early in his college career, but has since stayed out of trouble and kept scouts focused on his on-field play. If being too big is the only negative that NFL teams can find in Oakman’s play, it’s safe to say that this guy is going to have no problem making a big impact at the next level.
