Thanksgiving Football: Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

On a day packed with intriguing matchups, what does Thanksgiving football project for the Chicago Bears visiting the Detroit Lions?

Subplots

Momentum playing a huge role in the backdrop

Nothing plays into the success or failure of a team quite like momentum can.  For these two teams, it’s a completely different backdrop on each side.  The Bears come into Ford Field having won two-straight.  Their defense is playing well and finding some confidence while the offense, while inconsistent, can go off at any time.

The Lions on the other hand retreat home on the tail end of back-to-back losses in Arizona and New England in which their offense scored a total of 15 points.  Home field will be a nice buffer but is it enough to prevent a tailspin?

Key Matchup

Ndamukong Suh against Kyle Long

Whenever the Bears have lost to the Lions in recent memory it has often been because of the play of their defensive line, most notably defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.  His ability to get after Cutler was a huge reason Detroit won at home last year.  It was his presence that compelled Chicago to draft right guard Kyle Long.

While Suh had his way with him as a rookie, a lot has changed in a year.  Long is more experienced and has developed into the most dependable pass blocker the Bears have.  Like Suh is big, strong, athletic and tenacious.  Whomever is able to get the best of the other in this matchup will set the tone for the game.

Fantasy Players To Watch

Eric Ebron – TE

For months the Detroit Lions have tried to get their 1st round pick, tight end Eric Ebron more involved in the offense without much success.  This holiday clash may present their best opportunity.  Chicago has struggled against opposing tight ends in 2014 due to ongoing issues at the linebacker and safety positions.  Ebron should have a great chance to break loose, especially with Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate on the field.

Jay Cutler – QB

Nobody understands the implications of this game better than Jay Cutler.  He is quite familiar with the Lions pass rush and how hard it is to play at Ford Field.  However, he also has a history of playing well in that building, especially when he’s protected.  The Chicago Bears have made a concerted effort to get him on the move more, which could open up more opportunities for big plays.

Pick:  CHI 20, DET 30
