Houston Texans: Playoff Hopes Finished with loss to Bengals?

The NFL Playoffs are set to feature a few different teams in 2014, but it might be safe to say that the Houston Texans are finished with their playoff hopes. Ryan Mallett and his team fell to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday 22-13, picking up their sixth loss on the season.

Mallett struggled to get anything going for much of the day, sailing countless passes over his receiver’s heads. Everything seemed off in a big way for the former New England Patriots backup. He ended the afternoon with a completion percentage under 50, going 21-45 with just 189 yards.

  • Houston couldn’t get the running game working at any point against a fairly stout Bengals rushing defense. Despite big hopes that rookie running back Alfred Blue could get the job done in the season-changing game, the Texans saw a struggling offense sans Arian Foster.

At this point in the season, many have to wonder if Bill O’Brien’s squad is finished. Although the schedule doesn’t pose too many big threats the rest of the way, the Texans haven’t been able to get out of their own way for much of the year.

They’ll have the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in the two games after the Thanksgiving holiday.

For Texans fans, they can find solace in the fact that the rest of the AFC is a mess. The two Wild Card spots are wide open with the conference in shambles. We’ve seen a bit of everything from the contenders this year, the only thing holding Houston up.

Things aren’t done just yet, but it’s hard to see Mallett leading a miraculous run to finish the year. One would have to imagine that one more loss would doom Houston.

They won’t stop working and attempting to stay in the thick of the playoff race – can they manage to pull it off?
