Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott is improving his draft stock with each game, along with building a strong case as this year’s Heisman Trophy recipient.

Prescott’s greatest accomplishment to date is propelling the Bulldogs to a 6-0 record and three straight wins against LSU, Texas A&M, and Auburn. No matter what state the SEC is in, those are not easy games to win, especially for a team like Mississippi State which might present a challenge in recent years, but hasn’t been as good as they are now.

Prescott is a major reason why.

We all knew this was a player that could run with the football. He had 13 rushing touchdowns a year ago, and already has eight this season. What we didn’t see coming was his significant improvements from the pocket as a passer. Prescott has a really nice, quick release and makes his throws look effortless. He’s not without flaw as a passer, letting balls sail and sometimes missing easy throws that he shouldn’t. Still, it’s hard not to be impressed by his poise as a passing quarterback along with the added element of his ability to run the football.

Halfway through the season, that’s equated to 22 total touchdowns and six wins for the Bulldogs. As a junior, I think it’s safe to say Prescott will return for a senior season at Mississippi State as he continues his preparation for the next level of football, but the more he improves throughout this season, the more you have to wonder if he will at least consider a leap to the NFL.

At any rate, it’s been fun to watch his progress from last year to this year, but the challenge won’t get any easier, even with a road game against Kentucky. The Wildcats are hungry, and want to be the team to take the rug out from underneath this Mississippi State team. At 5-2, they are a capable squad so Prescott will need to be on his game Saturday not only to impress NFL scouts further, but to keep Mississippi State in line for a playoff appearance and a possible SEC title.
