P.J. Williams: Florida State CB 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Notes
By Joe Wedra
In a year that doesn’t feature certain positions as strong as the 2014 groups, the cornerback class in the 2015 NFL Draft is impressing more than most. Led by guys like Florida State CB P.J. Williams, the CBs are taking center stage on big boards across the country. This season, we see a group that could have four players drafted in the first round, and Williams is certainly among that bunch.
Here’s a scouting report on the junior CB, who doesn’t have to declare this year, but should if he continues on the track he’s on now.
STRENGTHS
The athleticism that Williams plays with is unquestioned. He’ll often play like a safety in the box that has the skills and shiftiness of an elite running back, something that stands out when going to tackle and play in open space.
He has the potential to be very good at the next level due to his raw skill and speed. When you talk about a guy that just goes out and play football, that’s Williams, and it shows in his above-average ability to keep up with great receivers.
WEAKNESSES
There aren’t enough reps out there to really tell if Williams can be a consistent coverage man at the next level. If he had a few more big plays to show he was an elite defensive back, it’d be easy to say he can be “that guy” in the first round. Because of that, his draft stock might not be at it’s full potential if he declares this year. I’d like to see a bit more consistency playing in space, as well.
DRAFT STOCK
Right now, it’s hard to say Williams is even able to be a sure-fire first round pick. There are too many factors to worry about here. Williams is raw, but is he currently polished and experienced enough for a team to take a chance with their first pick?
