Not a single person familiar with the NFL was convinced Rolando McClain would play again.  Now he’s suddenly back and finally realizing his potential.

Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens debacles all but ended career

Of all the Alabama linebackers to enter pro football over the past decade, all agreed none had the sheer talent to excel like McClain.  He had size, speed, instincts, leadership and intelligence.  That is why the Oakland Raiders made him the 8th overall pick in 2010.  Things started out well for him, but as the fluid coaching situation in Oakland continued he began to fall out of favor, reportedly making too many mental mistakes.  It grew so bad at one point that he publicly lashed out at the Raiders, declaring he was “mentally done” and wish “…to be anywhere besides here.”

Once he finally got out in 2013, he signed on with the Baltimore Ravens, hoping their much more stable coaching and front office structure could help him realize his potential.  Yet barely a month into the first off-season, he inexplicably announced his retirement.  It was impossible to know what the problems were, but after that the general consensus was that McClain was done.

Dallas Cowboys being rewarded for taking a flier

Apparently that wasn’t the case.  Baltimore ended up trading his rights and a seventh round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a sixth round pick.  Dallas, who has been plagued by injuries at linebacker, most notably with the loss of Sean Lee, felt it was worth taking a shot on McClain provided they could get him properly motivated.  Early signs are very promising.

Finally absent from the public eye and under a proven coach in Rod Marinelli, the 25-year old has gotten off to a tremendous start in 2013.  Through two games he has posted 15 tackles, a sack, and an interception.  The Cowboys defense has looked noticeably less porous with him on the field and it’s an intriguing sight to see.

It’s still a long way towards the end of the season, but if Rolando McClain can continue his hot start, he’ll have the Comeback Player of the Year award waiting for him.
