2014 Draft Grade: San Francisco 49ers Select Carlos Hyde

The San Francisco 49ers selected running back Carlos Hyde with the 57th pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Scheme Fit

Carlos Hyde is known best as a bruiser who has the vision, toughness and tackle-breaking ability to tote the load 30 times per game.  That overshadows how good of a pass catcher and blocker he is.  Not fast but finds a way to pick up chunk yardage.

My Reaction

I understand Frank Gore is getting old but considering the backloaded situation for the San Francisco 49ers at running back, not even value was enough to sway me on this pick.  There had to be a better offensive position like center or big receiver they could’ve gone to.  Yet, in spite of it all, he’ll be the eventual successor to Gore.

Grade:  B
