2014 Draft Grade: Cleveland Browns Select Joel Bitonio

The Cleveland Browns selected tackle Joel Bitonio with the 35th pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Scheme Fit

A late draft riser thanks to the Senior Bowl, Joel Bitonio got onto a lot of team radars thanks to his surprising versatility.  He played left tackle in college, has the size and strength for right tackle but has the ideal skill set for guard.  The Cleveland Browns can really plug him anywhere he’s needed most and should bolster that offensive line.

My Reaction

I would’ve loved this pick if the situation hadn’t changed for the Browns today when Josh Gordon failed another drug test.  Cleveland clearly needed a wide receiver going into that pick and while Bitonio will definitely improve the all-around blocking up front, which is very important, I felt they should’ve added another target for Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel.

Grade:  B-

something tells me there is going to be a dispute with the Browns/Gordon against the NFL. the Browns not addressing the need tells me perhaps, and I pray, that they know something we do not.

I’m beginning to reach that conclusion as well. Something isn’t being told that makes this situation unique.
