2014 NFL Draft Grade: New England Patriots Select Dominique Easley

The New England Patriots selected defensive tackle Dominique Easley with the 29th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

OVERALL GRADE

I just don’t like this pick. If I’m the Patriots, I select Louis Nix and get a big presence on the defensive line. Now, I’m not so sure I have a healthy guy who can hang in there and stay on the field. Overall as it stands right now, I have to give this pick a D.

WHY THIS PICK MIGHT WORK

Easley is a strong presence on the field, and when he is healthy, he’s very skilled. He is rated very high by many experts, so New England could have seen what many others saw. For me, I just don’t think Easley was worth a first round pick.

WHY THIS PICK COULD BE A BUST

Injuries, injuries, injuries. It’s pretty simple here. Easley can’t stay healthy, and because of that, I can’t applaud the Patriots for this pick. If he stays healthy, there’s a chance this works out. If not, Bill Belichick won’t be a happy man.

SURPRISE OR EXPECTED?

I think this was a surprise. I don’t understand why this selection was made. There were too many other options available to make this a secure pick.
