2014 NFL Draft Grade: Jacksonville Jaguars Select Blake Bortles

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected quarterback Blake Bortles with the 3rd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Here is a 2014 NFL Draft Grade

This pick shows that the team is willing to move on from Blaine Gabbert and start over, getting young on offense.

OVERALL GRADE

It was hard to make a horrible pick here, but I give this selection a solid A+.

WHY THIS PICK MIGHT WORK

Gabbert wasn’t ever the option, and it’s clear that the Jaguars were high on the UCF QB all along. Why shouldn’t we expect him to start right away? He clearly has the deep ball down, and his skills are fairly polished. I think he can win immediately.

WHY THIS PICK COULD BE A BUST

The only thing I can think is that Jacksonville might be upset that they don’t sell tickets. Johnny Manziel would have done that, and Bortles might not. Who knows, but for now, it appears to be a good football move.

SURPRISE OR EXPECTED?

This is a TOTAL surprise. Many expected Manziel to go here, and I don’t think anyone expected Bortles here. He certainly is an interesting prospect. Bortles can make fans excited if they buy into the pick. Be surprised, fans! This is the future of the Jags.
