2014 NFL Draft Grade: Atlanta Falcons Select Jake Matthews

The Atlanta Falcons selected tackle Jake Matthews with the 6th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

This pick shows the team really is serious about upgrading the trenches.

OVERALL GRADE

This is an interesting one to grade, but I think the Falcons made the right move here. The pick of Matthews gives them a B+

WHY THIS PICK MIGHT WORK

Matt Ryan will be thrilled because this selection is a big one. Matthews is one of the best tackle prospects in this class, and I see no reason to believe that this will be a poor outcome.

WHY THIS PICK COULD BE A BUST

The Falcons need a pass-rusher, and they might not get it due to the fact that Mack and Clowney were off the board. Either way, Matthews is a huge presence that will be big for this team.

SURPRISE OR EXPECTED?

This move was a big surprise considering Khalil Mack went to the Raiders just one pick ahead of them. We’ve definitely seen some incredible surprises this year, and this pick is just that. In the end, I think this selection has a ton of upside. While it might be a bit shaky now, I wouldn’t be shocked if people remember this as one of the best in history.
