2014 Draft Grade: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select Mike Evans

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected wide receiver Mike Evans with the 7th in the 2014 NFL draft.

Scheme Fit

Josh McCown revitalized his career in Chicago throwing to big receivers in Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall.  It makes perfect sense that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would hope to copy that success by teaming Pro Bowler Vincent Jackson with Mike Evans.  The Texas A&M product is a 6’5” monster who has deceptive speed, explosive lower body strength and good hands to go up and get the football at any point in the field.

My Reaction

Evans was a straight up need for Tampa Bay especially after trading Mike Williams to Buffalo for a 6th round pick earlier in the off-season.  McCown knows exactly how to use big receivers and should be able to fully utilize that offense with the return of Doug Martin as well.  Lovie Smith learned from his time in Chicago that big weapon can have so much value on the football field.

Grade:  A
