2014 Draft Grade: New Orleans Saints Select Brandin Cooks

The New Orleans Saints selected wide receiver Brandin Cooks with the 20th in the 2014 NFL draft.

Scheme Fit

The New Orleans Saints are built around Drew Brees.  His success drives their success.  With the defense handled after the Jairus Byrd signing, they knew going into the draft they would need to upgrade the weaponry around their future Hall of Famer.  Brandin Cooks won’t win any size awards at 5’9” but the kid has blazing 4.33 speed with the desired athleticism and agility to make people miss in the open field.  He is perfect slot receiver but has the strength and hands to shift outside.

My Reaction

Cooks is a classic Saints pick.  Inside that Superdome with the fast track, the young man is going to find a loving home.  Sean Payton should be able to find all sorts of mismatches along the line of scrimmage, similar to how he used Darren Sproles.  It doesn’t provide the size many thought they needed but as the saying goes, there is no substitute for speed.  Cooks will create offense for them and be a nice safety valve for Brees.

Grade:  B+
