2014 Draft Grade: Cleveland Browns Select Justin Gilbert

The Cleveland Browns selected cornerback Justin Gilbert with the 8th in the 2014 NFL draft.

Scheme Fit

The Cleveland Browns know they have a star at cornerback in Joe Haden.  So it makes perfect sense for them to want to find somebody to pair with.  If Seattle showed anything, it’s that having two shutdown corners on both sides of the field it makes offensive execution almost impossible.  Justin Gilbert is the most athletic corner in the 2014 draft, very fast, fluid and fits ideally in a 3-4 scheme where his press coverage skill comes into play.  Add in some sneaky return ability and there are several things the Browns can do with him.

My Reaction

I was caught off guard at first but the more I thought about the more I began to appreaciate the pick.  Cleveland now has a pair of press corner with outstanding ability.  Haden is just the guy a team needs to bring along a talent like Gilbert.  If the Oklahoma State product lives up to his awesome physical potential, then Mike Pettine has his foundation for an elite defense in the near future.  Still, their offense really needs help.

Grade:  A-
