Running Back — Rashard Mendenhall (26)
Backups — Ryan Williams (23); Stepfan Taylor (22); Andre Ellington (24); William Powell (25)
The Cardinals added Rashard Mendenhall, who is a slam dunk to be the number one running back opening day if he is healthy. Mendenhall was injured and/or average in each of his last two seasons with Pittsburgh, but when healthy, he is a fantasy back who could at least provide you with a solid RB2 or even FLEX option. Mendenhall doesn’t break a lot of big runs, but he can get you tough yards and touchdowns, and I think I’d be intrigued to see where Mendenhall lands in drafts this summer. He is almost definitely going to be the featured RB in Arizona’s improved stable, and he’s playing on a one year ‘prove it’ contract.
Backup Ryan Williams can’t stay healthy, though he has a ton of talent and could be a very explosive piece of the Arizona offense. I would be scared to draft Williams, especially with the addition of Rashard Mendenhall. It seems like Arizona is going to play it really slow with the former Virginia Tech star, who has played in just five career games.
Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington were two really underrated additions in the 2013 NFL Draft, and two backs that I really liked. With Mendenhall on a one-year deal and Ryan Williams having so many injury issues, I think Taylor has a decent chance to see big action by 2014. Ellington is explosive but fell in the draft because of a poor 40 time.
William Powell rounds out the depth for the Cardinals at this position.
