Quarterback — Alex Smith (29)
Backups — Chase Daniel (26); Ricky Stanzi (25); Tyler Bray (21)
The Kansas City Chiefs wound up with the number one overall pick a year late, and weren’t able to land a top flight playmaker at that position with the top pick in the draft. They knew that more than a month beforehand, so they decided to trade their 2nd round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for former #1 overall pick Alex Smith, who over the last 26 games he’s started has been playing the best football of his NFL career.
Smith is a smart quarterback who doesn’t make a ton of eye-opening plays, but he is a guy who seems to know how to win when the situation is right, and he’s in a pretty good situation with the Chiefs. For the first time in a long time, it seems like Smith is with a team that truly wants HIM as their quarterback, and they’re not looking to replace him anytime soon. The 49ers changed coaches and offenses enough that Smith really had a disappointing start to his career, but he finally has figured it out over the last two years.
If he can stay healthy, I think Smith is a pretty solid low-end backup QB option for your fantasy team. He might be a free agent in almost every league, but he won’t throw many interceptions and has some nice playmakers around him offensively.
