Quarterback — Philip Rivers (31)
Backups: Charlie Whitehurst (30); Brad Sorensen (23)
What in the world happened to Philip Rivers? After elite quarterback play for a stretch of three seasons between 2008-2010, Rivers fell almost completely off the map after the 2012 season when he simply couldn’t lead the Chargers on a late-season run. Over the last two seasons, Rivers has thrown 35 interceptions, and saw his lowest touchdown total (26) since his second season as a starter in 2007. Rivers also lost a career high seven fumbles yesterday, and was clearly flustered by the lack of protection.
If Rivers can’t get better protection, I would say he’s no more than a QB2 in most leagues. He is going to need a resurgence at the WR position, which could see someone like Vincent Brown breakout in 2013.
Charlie Whitehurst is the primary backup, and the Chargers also drafted Brad Sorensen out of Southern Utah.
