2. Second round, 47th overall: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Escobar is one of the best pass catching tight ends in the draft. The TE position suddenly became an area of need when the Cowboys’ depth was reduced to last year’s sixth rounder James Hanna as the only backup on the roster. Escobar could be a better red zone receiving threat than Jason Witten, who is coming off of a huge season. The Cowboys are adapting to the two TE set that has become so prominent in the NFL, and Escobar is a great player to add to an already talented offense. He is a great pass catcher and was considered probably the third or fourth best at his position in a very deep draft at TE. Can’t fault Jerry Jones for going after a big playmaker here.
