2. Second round, 44th overall: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
I am a huge fan of teams doubling up on positions in the early rounds to address a position of need. The Panthers saw their need at DT (even with Dwan Edwards having a good year last year) and they nailed it on the head with their first two picks, getting not only the top DT in the draft arguably in Star Lotulelei, but another fringe first round graded player in Kawann Short from Purdue. Short is a bit lighter than Lotulelei at 299 pounds, but he packs a serious punch and has some of the best quickness from the interior DL that you will see. He is a a little bit better of a pass rusher while Lotulelei is more of a space eater/run stuffer, so Short is the guy who will help clean up messes in the backfield. I think with the addition of Short, you are looking at one of the best young defensive lines we have in the NFL today. Short will eventually become a starter, while you have first rounder Lotulelei and double-digit sack players Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson. I really like this pick and think the Panthers have a really good thing going with their DL situation right now.
