Cleveland Browns Name Brandon Weeden Starting Quarterback

Apparently Brandon Weeden has shown enough to be named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns. With no games even played, head coach Pat Shurmur has named Weeden his top signal caller for the start of the 2012 season.

“Brandon is the starter and we’re moving forward,” Shurmur said. “We’re rolling and I’m not looking back.”

As Adam Schefter pointed out on Twitter last night, this will be the first season since the AFL/NFL merger where at least three rookie quarterbacks will be starting on opening weekend for this NFL season. Of course, the other two quarterbacks were the top two picks in the draft, Andrew Luck of the Colts and Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins.

For Weeden, this is a big development and vote of confidence. The Browns are going to have one of the youngest, most inexperienced teams in the league this year but they could be forming a Lions type of revival in Cleveland right now. This is a good opportunity for them to get the kinks out and grow together as young players. Weeden’s window as a pro is not as wide open as some of the other players on Cleveland’s roster, but he should be a good leader and who knows, maybe the Browns will surprise some people this year.
