Mike Mayock: Chandler Jones is a Mid-First Round Pick

facebooktwitterreddit

Recently NFL.com posted a video about players who might get drafted earlier than anyone expects. Michael Lombardi picked Shea Mclellin

Chandler Jones

“the more tape I watch of him the more I’m convinced he’s a solid mid round DE. He can get to the QB. I like him more than Coples, getting to the point where I like him more than Upshaw. I like him better than Mercilus”

Jones has been a player I’ve taken a particular liking too because of my affinity for the New York Giants. Jones fits the mold of a Giants defensive end. Jones is 6’5 266 pounds.  Jones has extremely long arms 35.5″ long arms and good measurables.

Let’s compare Jones combine numbers to Jason Pierre Paul’s combine numbers

4.71 forty yard dash, 19 bench press reps, 30.5″ vertical, 115″ broad jump, 7.18 3 cone drill, 4.67 20 yard shuttle

4.87 forty yard dash, 22 bench press reps, 35″ vertical, 120″ broad jump, 7.07 3 cone drill, 4.38 2o yard shuttle

Which combine numbers are better? Player A has a faster 40 yard dash, but has worse numbers in every other category. Player B seems to be stronger and based on the numbers more explosive, just not as fast.

Player A is Jason Pierre Paul the athletic freak. Player B is Chandler Jones.

Did I also mention that Chandler Jones is actually longer than Jason Pierre Paul? Neither player was extremely productive, but Jones had three years at Syracuse compared to Pierre-Paul’s one year at USF. You see the Jason Pierre Paul and Chandler Jones comparisons and they might be apt. Watch out for Chandler Jones who to me could go as high as #20 overall to the Tennessee Titans.
