Seattle Seahawks Positional Needs Pre-Free Agency

I’ve been taking a look at some teams and what positions they need to address prior to free agency and today I’ve decided to take a look at the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks had a surprisingly good season last year and showed that Pete Carroll and team are building a nice young roster out there in Seattle. I think an under-appreciated roster.

The needs are in order of descending importance.

Quarterback:

This team could be a quarterback away from winning the division. Last year their Quarterback play was average at best. Their quarterbacks combined (mostly Tavaris Jackson) threw 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Jackson averaged under 7 yards per pass attempt. In a passing league where  big plays reign supreme, that kind of production from the quarterback position just won’t cut it.

Defensive End:

Chris Clemons is having a renaissance out in Seattle, but outside of Clemons no player had more than four sacks and that was linebacker Leroy Hill. The Seahawks will be in the market to add a defensive end, or at least a defensive tackle who can rush the passer on third and long.

Defensive Tackle:

The Seahawks also need to improve the talent and depth at defensive tackle. The Seahawks have good run stuffing defensive tackles, but had 5.5 sacks from the interior of their defensive line this year.

Linebacker:

Seahawks have a lot of talent at the linebacker position, but after trading away Aaron Curry last year and potentially losing Leroy Hill via free agency this this team suddenly needs linebacker help. The Seahawks are set at two positions with K.J. Wright flashing brilliance at times last year and Hawthorne being a steady presence in the middle.

Tight End:

John Carlson is a free agent and the Seahawks would love to resign him at the right price to play with Zach Miller to form a really nice 1-2 combo that could match up with any non-New England duo in the league.

Running Back:

Lynch is heading into free agency after an impressive season. Last year Lynch ran for over 1200 yards and also rushed for 12 touchdowns. The Seahwks have done a terrific job of building up their offensive line, but they have to either retain Lynch or find another option for him. Carroll has shown that he wants to be able control the line of scrimmage up front and Lynch is a big part of that. I expect Lynch to be resigned or I’d put this even higher.

Right Guard.

The Seahawks did a great job up front this year, but this is more of a question for Seahawks fans. How good is Pat Mcquistan he’s not a household name that’s for sure and he’s been a journey man bouncing around the league prior to this year. Drafting David DeCastro at 12th overall to play RG would give the Seahawks the best offensive line in football if Okung can stay healthy.

Health!

If the Seahwks address the quarterback position in the off-season the other ingredient they need more than any other is health. Russell Okung struggled with injuries as did most of their offensive weapon. Their receiving numbers last year look  awful, but their receiver corps is not. Sydney Rice, Mike Williams, Golden Tate. I like that group there is enough talent there if they have the right quarterback.
