NFL Mocks Exclusive Interview with Southern Mississippi DE Cordarro Law

Every year, there are guys that fall through the cracks, guys that not a lot of people even in today’s age of instant information talk about. One of those players this year is Southern Mississippi defensive end Cordarro Law, who took some time out of his pre-draft schedule to talk to me.

Law said his pre-draft plan is to train in California, and he also participated in the Casino Del Sol All-Star game in Arizona earlier in January.

The senior defensive end had an extremely productive career at Southern Miss, and the team overall had a lot of success in 2011 finishing in the top 25. I asked Law about this past season and what was the key to success, and what went wrong in the losses.

He said that this year’s version of Southern Miss was a team that knew how to lose games, but more importantly, they knew how to win. They were a veteran team and were always focused.

Individually, Law had a ton of success these past couple of years, in 2011, he finished with 64 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 4 passes broken up, and four forced fumbles. I asked Law what the key was to that success:

“First and foremost, I just tried my best to make sure the team got a win. I didn’t play to the best of my abilities in the losses, and that showed. I felt like I was the leader of the defense.”

The leader of the defense faced some tough competition in college, but when I asked him who was the toughest, his answer was the entire UAB offensive line, which features 2012 prospect Matt McCants, who recently participated in the Senior Bowl. Against UAB, Law didn’t have any tackles for loss or sacks.

I also asked Law to give me a “self” scouting report:

“I feel like one of my best assets is my awareness for the ball. I’m always trying to make a big play, and in college I made a lot of plays.”

Law told me that as he transitions to the NFL level, he feels like the biggest change is going to be learning how to play in space. At the all-star game, coaches had him playing with his hand in the dirt as well as in a two-point stance as an outside linebacker. He says that the biggest difference between the two is learning different techniques and making different reads on plays, learning how to play in coverage.

He also had some interesting goals for his first season.

“Right away, I just want to make an NFL roster. I think in my first year, I want to establish myself as one of the best special teams players on the team.”

Law told me that his skill-set is not scheme specific. He told me he is simply a “football player” and that any scheme would be okay for him. It’s clear to me that Law is a team player who is willing to do whatever it takes to make an NFL roster and make an impact. The production was certainly there in college, and they say that if you can get to the quarterback in college, more than likely you’ll do it in the pros as well.

We’re really grateful that Cordarro was able to take time out of his schedule to talk to NFL Mocks, and wish him all the best as he attempts to live out his dream of being an NFL defensive end.
