This is our Desmond Trufant scouting report. For all of our other scouting reports check out our scouting report page.

Trufant is likely to return for the 2012 College Football season because he has a lot of physical ability but has been inconsistent. If he improves his consistency he could shoot his stock into the first round range for 2013.

Pros:

Elite straight line speed…Good height…fluid athlete…high ceiling…just really aggressive and competitive….makes a lot of plays on the football…good bloodlines (Marcus Trufant’s younger brother)…pretty good timing on blitzes…gets good depth in his zone coverage

Cons:

Deflects a lot of passes, but doesn’t come away with enough interceptions…needs to get stronger to press consistently at the N.F.L. level…aggressive, but needs to do a better job of limiting his mistakes…Needs to work on breaking down in the open field and making the tackle…inconsistent in the technical parts of his game…needs to improve on reacting to comeback routes to make a play on the football

Player comparison:

insight from Mark Knight of Husky Haul

Right now if he declared I would think he would go fairly low like 6th round or something. He just isn’t polished enough yet. There is a lot he needs to work on, in most areas of his game.

He is really aggressive and can cause turnovers. He is about average in both zone and man-to-man coverage. He struggles with tackling sometimes on wrapping up. However, I have seen in the last few games a vast improvement in this area. At the beginning of the season he was missing a good amount of tackles. Because of his aggressiveness he can sometimes jump routes.

Overall though he is the potential and the ability to be a good player at the next level. He is fast, and can lockdown receivers when needed. Just needs to work on consistency.
